Hirado Island, located on the western side of Kyushu, is the 20th largest island in Japan and is now connected to the mainland by a large suspension bridge. On southern part of Hirado island stands a highly prestigious Shijiki Shrine, built before the first western trade started during the Age of Discovery. Mt. Shijiki and its surrounding area was worshipped as a sanctuary. Also the people in the area had historically been living with the blessings from the sea using the sea-bourne wind for fishery, rice cultivation and sake brewing. On the small island off the northern tip of Hirado Island still inherits its traditional fishery and cuisine where authentic island life could be experienced. The entire island is mountainous with very little flat land where the hills drops into the coastline. Gathering wisdom, people raised crops from this limited land. With the warm current flowing along the coast, Hirado boasts excellent fishing grounds, leading to a thriving fishing industry. Hirado Island, located on the western sie of Kyushu, is the 20th largest island in Japan and is now connected to the mainland by a large suspension bridge. In the 16th century, during the Age of Exploration, Hirado Island became Japan's gateway to the world when Portuguese ships arrived, marking the first meeting point between "samurai" and the Western world. It was a place where Western culture flowed into Japan and began to influence Japanese culture. While Hirado Castle, a traditional Japanese fortress, symbolizes the island, the town also offers glimpses of a slightly Western style, making it a unique and intriguing destination. The entire island is mountainous with little flat land, and the hills extened directly to the coast. The locals have cleverly ade use of the limited land for agriculture and, thanks to the warm currents along the coast, have also thrived in fishing. This journey allows you to enjoy the unique way of life and natural beauty of Hirado.
