Located in Nagasaki Prefecture is Japan’s westernmost city, Hirado. The city of Hirado has long served as a major hub for international trade, with the Netherlands in particular. Thanks to the many remaining traces of its merchant past, Hirado offers a fascinatingly unique atmosphere made up of a fusion of both Japanese and Dutch culture. Hirado was also the starting point where Christian missionaries began their work in Japan, and many Christians continue to visit Hirado to worship at the number of churches scattered throughout the city. Hirado is also a great place to visit for its renowned local fresh seafood.
